Valmarie Hydroseeding

In 2021 we traveled to Val Marie, SK to do 585,000 m2 of hydroseeding for Aecon Transportation West. The hydroseeding was done along Highway 4 stretching from Val Marie to the US border.

Hillside Cemetery Phase 2

The irrigation system upgrades consisted of an HDPE irrigation system consisting of 62 zones and over 400 heads. This was one of the most challenging projects in Grassroots history with all lateral lines being drilled through grave space corridors. This project was completed on time and on budget in June of 2022.

Medicine Hat Regional Airport

Landscape and irrigation improvements to the front entrance of the MHRA included the planting of over 100 trees and 2000 perennials and shrubs, irrigation system upgrades, and installation of a rammed earth wall and fabricated entrance features and light signs. The irrigation system was a full HDPE Rainbird Decoder, the job was completed in June of 2021.

We have done a few flood berms for the City of Medicine Hat in the past few years, these include:

– Harlow Berm

– Industrial Ave #1 Berm

– Industrial Ave #2 Berm

All three berms saw the installation of Turf Reinforcement Matting on the wet side of the berm, and Flexterra FGM was applied to the dry side for erosion protection.

2015 saw Grassroots construct the flagship community park for the City of Medicine Hat Land & Properties Division. This park saw the construction of a toboggan hill, limestone waterfall, and creek feeding into a pond that services the irrigation system with both potable and raw water capabilities. On top of all that, Grassroots installed a 31 zone HDPE Rainbird irrigation system w/ raw water connection, tree, shrub, and perennial planting, hydroseeding, and maintenance.

This was truly constructed as an all-season destination park for the local area residents.

In 2010 Grassroots was contracted to do the riparian & wetland plantings in 6 storm ponds constructed to handle the stormwater resulting from the construction of the NW leg of Stoney Trail in Calgary. As well as the plantings, Grassroots was also contracted to hydroseed all the head slopes and other select locations for each overpass on that section of the ring road.

In the fall of 2016 Grassroots was contracted by Alberta Parks to construct 30 new campsites complete with electrical services at Kinbrook Island Provincial Park, just south of Brooks, AB.

The construction included topsoil stripping and site grading, topsoil placement, installation of gravel for the road and stalls, 31 zone HDPE irrigation system w/ Rainbird control system, tree and shrub planting, hydroseeding, and installation of fire pits, marker posts, and a 200m long privacy fence.

Greenhouse #3 Expansion included a full HDPE Irrigation Mainline and a Potable Water Mainline as well. Big Marble Farms is one of the city’s biggest employers and the largest fresh vegetable farm that operates year-round in Alberta.

Gilwell Park Landscape & Irrigation Improvements

The summer and fall of 2020 saw Grassroots begin work on major irrigation and landscape renovation of Gilwell Park in Medicine Hat. This is a City of Medicine Hat project and Grassroots is working closely with George Harris Collaborative from Calgary, who is the design and project consultant. The irrigation system was installed in 8 weeks and consisted of the following: 

• Full HDPE irrigation installation complete with Butt Fusion and electrofusion connections
• 1100m of 6” HDPE looped mainline
• 64 zones, over 450 heads, and over 10km of HDPE lateral lines (2” & 3”) 
• Baseline 3200 and 1000 Decoder controller systems c/w custom cabinet fabrication and installation
• Pumptronics VFD Centrifugal Pump Station c/w custom pump enclosure

The landscape portion of the project will be completed in the spring of 2021 and will consist of alternative landscape methods which include the seeding and sodding of fescue seed and sod around an existing disc golf course on the outer perimeter of the park. 

Outlook Saskatchewan Reach 6 Seeding & Erosion Control

In the summer of 2018 Grassroots was contracted by BYZ Enterprises to perform both drill seeding, and hydroseeding of Flexterra FGM applications in Outlook, SK on the Reach 6 Irrigation Canal system.  There was over 20ha of drill seeding and 1.9ha of Flexterra FGM installation. The Flexterra was used as an approved alternative to ECB on this project and was very successful in its application.  Grassroots continues to be a certified installer of Profile Flexterra FGM.
